The Colonel Spencer Inn was originally built as a private residence in 1764 on the land owned by Colonel Joseph Spencer of Connecticut who served in the French and Indian Wars. He was one of the first proprietors in this area and one of the charter grantees of the town of Campton serving as the first Town Clerk. Joseph Spencer, promoted to brigadier general, served in the Continental Army under General George Washington at the Siege of Boston in 1776.
At Colonel Spencer Inn, our guests can get an early start to the day before heading out to discover our beautiful region with our full homemade breakfast, featuring fresh New Hampshire local products when available. Some of our offerings include fresh homemade scones, waffles, french toast, quiche, juices, fruit parfait with yogurt and granola, local NH maple syrup and the freshest custom roasted coffee in the area from Mad River Coffee Roasters in Campton. Each day, breakfast is served from 7:30-9:30 am (if you need an earlier start to your day, please ask and we will gladly accommodate your request). We are also able to prepare meals and treats when welcoming guests who are vegetarian, vegan or are gluten-free (including celiac disease). Please let us know in advance so that we can prepare and provide the best possible experience.
The guest room names are from the families who owned the home over the years and had active rolls in the formation of the Plymouth and Campton communities.
Before the end of the war, the property was sold to Benjamin Baker, who also served with distinction in the Revolutionary War and played prominent roles in the early years of the republic. Joseph Spencer went on to be the first Delegate for Connecticut in the Continental Congress and served until his death in 1789. One of the Baker brothers also served under George Washington at the Siege of Boston in 1776, and the second brother participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
